Tuscany today is a day of celebration!
This festival was established ten years ago by the Tuscany Region to commemorate the abolition of the death penalty in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, back in November 30, 1786 (first state in the world to abolish it).

(Transcription of the Preamble and Article LI Abolition of death penalty
Criminal Law Reform, 30 November 1786, n. LIX.)
_______________________________________________________________________________

Leopold
BY THE GRACE OF GOD
ROYAL PRINCE OF HUNGARY AND BOHEMIA
Archduke of AUSTRIA
GRAND DUKE OF TUSCANY

Up from our future to the Throne of Tuscany regarded as one of our main duties the examination and reform of criminal legislation, and having soon recognized too severe, and derived from the maximum established in less happy times of the Roman Empire, or in turbulence anarchy of the low times, and especially not suited to the sweet and gentle character of the nation, providing provisional temper the rigor with instructions and orders to our courts, and with special edicts, by which the death sentences were abolished, the torture, and punishment immoderate, and not proportionate to the offense, and fines to the tax laws, until we were in a position through a serious and mature consideration, and by the help of the experiment with these new provisions to reform entirely the said Legislation.

With the greatest satisfaction of our father's heart We have finally recognized that mitigation of punishment combined with more accurate surveillance in order to prevent the reaction, and by the swift dispatch of the process and the readiness and safety of the sentence true criminals, instead of increase the number of crimes has considerably decreased the most common, and rendered almost unheard of in the terrible, so we come to the determination of not longer delay the reform of criminal legislation, with which abolished the death penalty, the maximum steady, as not necessary for the purpose proposed by the Company in the punishment of offenders, in any way obviate the use of torture, confiscation of property of offenders, tending mostly to the detriment of their innocent families who have no complicity in the murder, and banished by the law the proliferation of crimes of lese-majeste with improperly called refinement of cruelty invented in times perverse, and fixing the punishment proportionate to the crime, but inevitable in the cautious case, we are determined to order with all the fullness of our Supreme Authority as follows.

(... Omitted ...)

LI. We have seen with horror how easily passed in the legislature was decreed the death penalty even for crimes not serious, and having considered that the object of punishment should be the satisfaction in the private and the public injury, the Reo son also corrected it Society and the State, which amends can never despair, Rei security in the most serious and heinous crimes that do not remain at liberty to commit further, and finally the public example, that the government in punishing the crimes, and serve the properties to which this unique and direct, he must always make use of the most effective with the least possible harm to the offender that the effectiveness and restraint set is obtained than with the Death Penalty, with the penalty of Public Works , which serve as a continued, and not a momentary terror that often degenerate into pity, and removes the ability to commit new crimes, and the possible hope of returning to the Company a useful citizen, and correctly, having also considered that a very different laws could no longer agree with most gentle and docile manners of this century, and especially in the Tuscan people, we have come to abolish the determination as we abolished by this Act and for all the death penalty against any Reo , is present, is in default, and even confess, and convinced of any Capital Crime declared by the Laws enacted so far, which we all want in this part of the cease and abolished.

(... Omitted ...)

Such is our will, to which command that they be given full effect in all our Grand-Duchy, notwithstanding any law, statute, ordinance, or custom to the contrary.

Given in Pisa on 30. November 1786.

An author I like particularly:
Kahlil Gibran
Children

A
nd a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children."

And he said:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Love

Then said Almitra, "Speak to us of Love."

And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:

When love beckons to you follow him,

Though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,

Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

And when he speaks to you believe in him,

Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,

So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.

He threshes you to make you naked.

He sifts you to free you from your husks.

He grinds you to whiteness.

He kneads you until you are pliant;

And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;

For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."

And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
